Why do we use specific spellings of SNOMED terms?

At Dyad, we have decided to align with the preferred term as published by SNOMED UK. This preferred term represents the most commonly used spelling in medical contexts, whether it follows British or American English conventions. By adhering to the preferred spelling, we ensure consistent coding of labels in EHRs. We understand that individual preferences may vary. However, given the vast number of GP practices across the UK, switching between spellings would introduce unnecessary complexity. Using the SNOMED UK preferred spelling ensures clarity and uniformity in our approach.

Example: "Orthopaedic" and "orthopedic" are both correct spellings of the term referring to the medical field of orthopedics. The main difference lies in the spelling, often influenced by dialect or regional preference. SNOMED UK typically uses the British English spelling, but this rule is not consistent across all cases.
