How to Upload Scanned Letters Saved as .enc (encrypted) Files

This article explains how to upload letters that are originally encrypted.

Written by Sarah

We’re aware that some customers have experienced issues uploading encrypted files to BetterLetter.

Any file can be encrypted, but for simplicity this article will use .tif as an example, with the encrypted files being .tif.enc. If you’re experiencing this issue with a different file type, simply replace .tif with the relevant file extension in the steps below.

If your scanned letters are saved with a tif.enc file extension, they have been saved in an encrypted format which is designed to prevent other people and tools from reading them. This includes BetterLetter. You can fix this by saving a readable copy (e.g. just plain .tif) from the EMIS document viewer, then uploading that copy instead.

Before you start

You'll know this applies to you if:

  • You scan letters through EMIS

  • Your scans save to a shared network drive (for example, your practice's G drive)

  • The saved files have .enc after the normal .tif extension

Renaming the file to remove ".enc" won't work as the file will stay encrypted, so you need to save a new copy from EMIS using the steps below.

Save a readable copy from EMIS

  1. Scan the letter through EMIS as you normally would.

  2. Open the scanned letter in the EMIS document viewer.

  3. Select the save icon (the floppy disk) in the top toolbar.

  4. Save the letter as a .tif file into the same folder as the original scan.

Upload the .tif file to BetterLetter

  1. Open the folder where your scans are saved.

  2. Sort the folder by file type. This groups the .tif files together and keeps them separate from the .tif.enc originals.

  3. In BetterLetter, select Upload and choose only the .tif files.

You’re done! Your letters will now upload and appear in BetterLetter as normal.

Quick reference

  • File type to upload: .tif

  • File type to avoid: .tif.enc

  • Where to save the copy: the same folder as your original scan
