How to Match Letters to Your Coders' Experience

Give each coder the right letters, and the right level of checking.

Written by Sarah

Not every letter is equally complex, and not every coder has the same experience. Matching the two keeps your team quick and accurate.

Use the Coder Complexity Matrix

Our Coder Complexity Matrix groups letter types from simple to complex. Then:

  • Start new coders on simpler letters, such as A&E letters or routine clinic letters.

  • Give complex letters, such as discharge summaries or oncology letters, to experienced coders.

Assign letters

On the Letters page, select letters and choose Assign to give them to a coder. Assigning a department to one person helps them get to know its letter types.

Set the right approval level

Practice admins can set how many AI suggestions each coder approves one by one:

  • High touch for new coders

  • Risk-based for coders who are comfortable with BetterLetter

  • Low touch for experienced coders who want to work at speed
