Last Month at BetterLetter: September 2026

Read about the updates we made last month, and what's coming up next.

Written by Sarah

September has been focused on making BetterLetter easier to use, giving practices more control over their correspondence, and continuing to improve the way letters move through the workflow. We've introduced new document editing capabilities, made further improvements to the Letters experience, and delivered several enhancements to help practices manage correspondence safely and efficiently.

Merge Letters & Reorder Pages

We've introduced new document editing capabilities that give users more control over their correspondence directly within BetterLetter.

Users can now reorder pages within a document, making it easier to correct the order of correspondence before processing.

We're also piloting the ability to merge letters, allowing multiple documents to be combined into a single piece of correspondence. This feature is not widely available to all practices as of yet, but will be in upcoming weeks.

These improvements reduce the need to download documents and make changes in external software, helping practices process correspondence more efficiently.

Choose Your Output PDF Format

Practices can now choose the PDF format used when sending correspondence to their EHR or Docman system.

This setting was originally announced to practice administrators by email. As the majority of practices have continued using the default option, we'd recommend taking a moment to check that your practice is using the format that works best for your workflow. Read more about this feature here.

Improved Letter Viewing

We've made it easier to view letters within BetterLetter. Users can now zoom and pan around documents, making it simpler to inspect specific sections and navigate larger pieces of correspondence. Read more about this feature here.

A New Letters Page Experience

Following last month's introduction of improvements to the Letters experience, we've now moved users over to the new Letters page by default.

The new experience is designed to make working through correspondence smoother and more intuitive. We're continuing to gather feedback and make improvements, so please keep sharing your thoughts with us as you use the new Letters page. Read more about this change here.

AI Improvements

We've continued to improve the reliability of AI across BetterLetter this month, with a focus on making sure key details in letters are identified correctly the first time.

Dates in British format

We've fixed an issue where some dates were being interpreted in American format. For example, a date such as 03/09 could previously be read as 9 March rather than 3 September. Dates are now read in British format as standard, helping ensure they come through correctly without needing manual correction.

DNACPR decisions

We've improved how our AI identifies DNACPR decisions in letters, so these important details are picked up more reliably. Rather than simply recording the codes, BetterLetter will now raise a GP review task. This helps ensure that key end-of-life care decisions are appropriately brought to the attention of a GP for review.

A Few Small Improvements

We've made a number of improvements to task handling this month. We've fixed an issue where tasks could reappear after being manually deleted, helping to prevent unnecessary tasks from returning to users' workloads.

We've also made a number of behind-the-scenes improvements to keep AI processing stable and consistent as we continue to improve the experience.

Looking Ahead: October

Our main focus for October is improving the way practices find, manage, and complete tasks.

We're developing a new Tasks experience that will initially be available to EMIS-only practices, with plans to subsequently offer it as an option for Docman and SystmOne practices.

The new experience will give users a clearer view of the work that needs to be completed, with tasks grouped by taskbox and visibility of how many open tasks are waiting in each area. Users will be able to access open tasks directly, as well as view tasks across taskboxes in one place.

We're also introducing filtering and sorting options to make it easier to find the right tasks, alongside information about when a task was created and how long it has been waiting. This will give practices and operational leads greater visibility of outstanding work and help teams manage their workload more effectively.

We will be improving logging, giving users visibility over previous changes in state, task reassignments and note additions.

As always, thank you for your continued feedback - it continues to shape what we build next.

See you next month!
